In the first weeks of school, children will be learning about each other, their teachers, and
themselves. We will focus on the classroom and the creation of a physically and emotionally safe

CA Department of Social Services: Licensing and Child Interviews
Emunah Hebrew Academy is licensed through the California Department of Social Services,
Community Care Licensing. Periodic visits are made to the school and at such time the Licensing
Analyst may interview several children as part of the licensing requirements. Parents will be
notified if their child is interviewed. The interview may consist of questions to the child
regarding how they like our school. The visit and the interview are not scheduled in advance.
The department of Social Services and the Licensing Agency, per Title 22, Division 12, Chapter
1, Section 101200, “shall have the authority to interview clients, including children or staff, and
to inspect and audit client or facility records without prior consent. The school shall make
provision for private interviews with clients, including children, or any staff member; and for the
examination of all records relating to the operation of the facility
School Philosophy
We believe in the individuality of the child, how each one learns, with an emphasis on each
child’s abilities and needs, creating lessons that fit into the context of the students’ lives both
inside and outside of school. Some children may be visual, some auditory and others kinesthetic
learners. Our staff implements a curriculum that fosters creativity and empowers students to
discover their own identity, making the material come alive in order to inspire our students.
Beyond the essential text in any lesson, it is imperative to connect the story to the students. By
adding images, kinesthetic exercises, sounds, and conversations that contain stimulating
questions, which everyone could personally reflect on, can allow a personal and group response.

We believe that behavior management should never put the dignity of any student at risk. The
student should not be embarrassed in front of their friends. The teachers advocate for each of
their students, modeling appropriate behavior.
We believe that teaching is improved by constantly assessing the students’ knowledge both
formally and informally. We encourage growth through successful social interactions,
participation in learning experiences, and the prospect of self-discovery.
School Goals
Our preschool program has been designed to encourage your child to explore his/her world
using all his/her senses in a creative, exciting, always growing manner… and a lot of fun!
Language Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies, Art, Music and Movement are integrated into both
our Judaic and Secular monthly units. We introduce the ABC’s, aleph-bet and number
recognition concepts. Holidays are celebrated, along with Rosh Chodesh, Shabbat and Birthday
Parties.
Children explore various learning centers in the classroom. For example, the block area, light
table, dramatic play, work with manipulative, the art and sensory tables, music, science and
simple math. They participate in meaningful and developmentally appropriate class activities and
learn to express their opinion and ideas while listening respectfully to their classmates in small
group and large group settings. They learn how to be members of a classroom environment, as
well as their Jewish community. They share positive social experiences and learn how to get
along with each other and become kind caring friends.

Emunah Hebrew Academy Curriculum
The Emunah Hebrew Academy Curriculum is built around our focus on the Jewish child, taking
into account the Developmental Domains (Social/Emotional, Physical, Cognitive, Perceptual)
and appropriate developmental benchmarks. School readiness is as the forefront as our children
progress through each class level.
Toddler: (18-24 months old)
7
Toddler interaction is based on respectful, responsive, relationship-based care and education.
Curriculum is guided by caregiving routines and focused interaction between the child and the
caregiver. Environments for play encourage exploration as toddlers grow and develop. Particular
attention is paid to the child’s transition from home to our caring, educational environment.
Gesher: (2-3 years old)
Through the loving and patient guidance of our teachers, the child’s transition from home to
school will be an enjoyable one. Through the combination of our Judaic and Secular monthly
themes, children develop social skills, problem solving skills, a longer attention span and a sense
of being part of a community. We offer an enriched curriculum of age appropriate arts & crafts,
songs, music, and our rich Jewish Heritage, rounds out our Gesher’s program.
Nursery: (3-4 years old)
To enter our Nursery program, children must turn 3 years of age by September 1st. They must
also be “Potty trained” to be able to attend Nursery. Our nursery program concentrates both its
Judaic and Secular studies in the morning. The afternoon incorporates a more relaxed curriculum
of open-ended art projects, movement, additional storytelling and PE. Both curriculums are
taught through our monthly themes. Within each theme, we introduce ABC, aleph-bet, pre-
reading, pre-math, science, social studies, art, music and dramatic play. In addition, the love of
Torah, Mitzvot, Middot, Berachot, Teffilot, the Chagim, Rosh Chodesh and Shabbat are
incorporated throughout the day. We work with the “whole child”, utilizing hands on activities.
Puzzles, cutting, coloring and age appropriate manipulative help their children develop their fine
motor skills. Movement, dancing and outdoor play, develop their gross-motor skills. Social,
emotional and problem-solving skills are reinforced daily.
Kindergarten: (4-5 years old)
To enter the Kindergarten program, children must turn 4 years of age by September 1st. Our
curriculum is taught through hands-on art activities, games, drama, songs, music, movement, and
cooking activities. Aleph-Bet and ABC’s are incorporated into our daily lessons through sounds
of the letters and simple vocabulary. In addition, Parsha, Tefillot, Berachot, Mitzvot, Middot, the
Chagim, Rosh Chodesh, and Shabbat, are integrated into our curriculum. Both our Secular and
Judaic curriculum are taught through our monthly themes utilizing the “whole child” approach to
learning. Each theme includes pre-reading, writing, math skills, science, social studies, music art,
language arts, movement and drama. Pre-math includes recognizing numbers, matching,
classifying, sequencing, counting, sorting, graphing and shape recognition. Rhyming, dictation of
stories, storytelling and dramatic play, encourage the mastery of language skills. Our social
studies units teach us about the world we live in. Science themes include units on the four
seasons, animal, plant, and insect live, healthy bodies, the five senses, and hands-on science. We
also continue to work to develop their social, emotional and problem-solving skills.

Communication
Parents and teachers are on the same team to ensure the best for each child. Because of this, it is
essential that we have open communication. This is accomplished in several ways:
Annual parent-teacher conferences
Phone calls on an as-needed basis
Occasional notices
Back to school night
Your child may bring home notes about special class activities, Parsha questions,
general school information, etc. PLEASE READ THEM CAREFULLY and thank
your child for being a good messenger.
In addition, due to an increasingly paper-less world, messages about important
school news will be sent via e-mail and WhatsApp. PLEASE READ THEM!
Please let us know if you don’t have access to e-mail so that we can make other
arrangements to help keep you informed.
We encourage you to speak with your children’s teachers about classroom policies,
academic progress and behavior and we always welcome your comments and suggestions. You
may leave a message for the teacher and she will get back to you as quickly as possible. If you
need to speak to someone about an urgent matter, or believe that a concern was not addressed,
please call the office right away for help.
Enrollment Policy
1. Your child must be at least 18 months when enrolled, and not older than Pre-1 age (6
years old)
2. Enrollment shall be open to any child, provided that the school can accommodate the
special needs of that child.
3. Enrollment in the school shall be granted without discrimination in regard to sex, race,
color, or political belief.
4. Before a child is permitted to attend school, he/she must have current immunization
records and other required forms on file.
Up to date immunization records
Admission agreement and enrollment form
ID emergency information
Physicians report
Parents Right Receipt
Consent for emergency medical treatment
Personal Rights/ child abuse
9
Placement and Parent Communication
Before a child can be enrolled into Emunah Hebrew Academy, a personal admissions interview
will take place with the Director and Administrator of the school. Through this interview, the
director will assess the child to see where he/she fits best into our program. If we cannot provide
the services that a child needs, suggestions will be given to the parent as to where he/she can find
the best possible program for their child.
Immunization Requirements
Before your child can be admitted to our school, the following immunization requirements need
to be up to date.
T.B. test assessment
Polio 3 doses
DPT/Td 4 doses
MMR 1 dose
HIB 1 dose
HEP B 3 doses
Chickenpox (vermicelli) 1 dose
Meals and Snacks
Due to several reasons, hot lunch is mandatory for all children. Hot lunch is not included in
tuition. There is a separate fee for hot lunch. Please note that Emunah Hebrew Academy is a
nut free school and please don’t send anything that contains nuts as it’s a danger to other
students.
MEAL MENU
Morning snack: 9:00 am 9:30 am
Lunch: 11:30 am 12:00pm
Afternoon snack: 2:00 pm 2:30 pm
Rest Time
Your child is required by Social Services, to have a daily rest time each afternoon. We will
provide the children with a cot, pillow, and sheets. We wash the beddings every other week.
Children are not required to sleep. Books and quiet music will be provided for their relaxation.
10
Field Trip
Due to the concern of many parents, we will not take the children away from school on a “trip”.
We will bring special events and visitors to the school during the year for entertainment.
Health and Safety
Your child’s health is important to all of us. It is to the child’s benefit that parents keep the
school up-to-date on home and cell phone numbers, emergency numbers and other pertinent
information. All children will have a “visual health check” each morning as they enter their
class. If your child has any signs of illness, he/she will not be allowed in school that day.
When your child is not feeling well, please be considerate of the teachers and children, by
keeping him/her home until he/she is feeling better. If your child has a fever, diarrhea,
vomiting, or a green runny nose, he/she must be kept at home until symptom free for 24
hours. A temperature above 99.2 is an indication that your child is either not well, or is coming
down with something and should be kept home. If you are not certain what to do, please call the
school’s director in the morning after 8:15 AM and we can discuss the best course of action to
take.
If a child does become ill at school, he/she will be kept isolated for his/her comfort and for the
safety of the other children until a parent or responsible adult comes to pick up.
If in case of an accident resulting in an injury, an initial assessment of the situation will be made.
If deemed necessary, we will call 911 and Hatzoloh. We will make every effort to contact a
parent or authorized person on record right away. Please note that our preschool staff has been
certified in CPR and First Aid.
Medication Policy
Any medication brought to school must be brought directly to the director’s office. The medicine
must be in its original bottle with a written note from the doctor stating the name of the
medicine, the time to be given, and the dose. The medication must be accompanied by a written
permission slip to let the teachers to be able to administer the medication. Permission forms are
available in the school office.
If your child becomes ill during the school day, we will call you immediately to take him/her
home. Please make sure all the information on your emergency forms is up to date. If we
cannot reach you, one of your contacts will be called to take your child home.
Injury Procedures
If your child should receive a minor injury at school, it will be cleaned with soap and water and a
bandage applied. In the case of serious medical issue or accident, the parents will be notified
immediately. If we are unable to reach you, your child will be brought to the nearest hospital and
11
the family doctor will be called. In the case of a serious accident, an Unusual Accident Form will
be sent home to you, as well as to Social Services. This form must be signed and returned to the
office to be placed in your child’s file.
Please advise the director and your child’s teacher of any allergies your child might have.
Please note that we are a NUT FREE school and avoid sending food that may contain any
traces of nuts.
Clothing
We know that a child must become involved to learn. He/she must see and feel, taste and smell.
Becoming involved often means getting messy or dirty, wet or rumpled. Please dress your child
in clothes that are appropriate for playing and getting dirty. However, we will still make an effort
to avoid problems from paint stains, etc. by providing the children with smocks to protect their
clothing.
Please label outer clothing (sweaters, jackets, etc.). There are often duplicate garments and labels
help avoid confusion and loss. This also applies to lunch boxes.
Please send in a complete change of clothes in a labeled bag. It will be placed in your child’s
own personal compartment in his/her classroom. It is important that this change of clothing fit
your child and be updated as needed.
Please note that the children should wear shoes with non-slip soles; Crocs and open-toed
sandals are not acceptable as they interfere with the children’s ability to participate safely in
the preschool program. However, you may send an extra pair of Crocs to be kept at school for
use when your child plays at the water table.
Drop-Off/ Pick Up & Sign-in sheets
To ensure safety and efficiency, we appreciate your adherence to our drop off policy as follows:
Enter the alley from Alcott St
Exit the alley from Saturn St, maintaining a speed no more than 5MPH during
carpool
Do not use your cell phone during carpool time
Never leave your car unattended while in carpool line
Please don’t engage the staff on carpool duty in lengthy discussions. Staff
members need to focus on their primary objective, helping load and unload your
children into your vehicle safely and expeditiously
NEVER leave any small children unattended in your vehicle
Please remain patient if drop-off/pick-up takes longer than expected
If you need help, please do not hesitate to ask for assistance
12
If you choose to escort your child into their classroom in the morning or pick
them up in the afternoon, please pay attention to the parking signs.
Please make sure to sign-in/ sign-out. All parents are required to sign the sign-in
sheets twice a day by writing your first and last name in full as well as the drop-
off and pick-up time. Signing in and signing out your child is a mandatory part of
California Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing Title XXII.
You must sign your full signature and time. The preschool could be fined up to
$200 per day for not having every signature and we would then pass this cost on
to you.
It is the policy of the school, as well as the State of California, that all children
under six years of age and/or under 60 pounds must be in a child restraint system.
Any child who does not have a car seat, the staff will not be able to put your child
in the car. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you are part of a carpool,
you will have to make prior arrangements for each driver to have the necessary
car seats in each vehicle. There are car seats available to borrow in the office for a
charge of $5 a day.
In order to make this a very successful school year, we ask that you bring your child to school on
time. and pick him/her up on time. If you pick your child up late there will be a late fee charge of
$10 for every 15 minutes after 4:00 pm Monday Thursday and after 1:15 pm on Friday.
If you are unable to pick up your child, and plan to send a relative or friend, please notify the
school office by phone or with a written note. Your child will not be released from school unless
we have this documentation in advance and that person’s name is listed on your Emergency
Form.
The first few days of school are usually very stressful for both parents and children…there are
usually lots of tears from both the children and parents. To ease this separation time, you may
want to walk your child into class and stay a few minutes until he/she is comfortable. If we work
together, your child will have a much smoother entrance into school.
First Week of School and Sign-In/Sign-Out
During the first week of school, we recommend that parents accompany their child into the
classroom and stay for a short while (5 to 15 minutes) as their child acclimates. The teachers will
help you know how long to stay. You may also use the option of dropping off your child in the
carpool lane if your child is comfortable with that choice. By the second week of the school,
your child will hopefully be ready for you to use the carpool lane.
Please note that you are required to sign in your child with a complete signature every day. The
sign-in sheet it located at the carpool line even if you walk your child into the classroom. If you
come later than 8:30 a.m., you will need to sign in your child at the school office. This is a legal
requirement. In the event you do not sign in your child we will call you to come back to the
school to sign your child in. In the event we are fined, we will pass the charge to you.
Children must be signed out with full signatures when being picked up at the end of the day.
13
Fire Drills, Earthquake Drills & Emergency Preparedness
Periodically your child will participate in a fire drill and in an earthquake drill. We encourage
you to discuss the experience with your child at home, as well as practicing your own home drills
Teach your child when and how to dial 911 in case of an emergency outside of school.
In the event of a natural disaster every precaution is being made to keep your child safe at
school. Please be assured that the teachers and other school personnel are trained. We have basic
emergency supplies at school to give your child any basic emergency first-aid care if needed. In
every classroom there are backpack emergency supply kits in case of an emergency.
Your child will be kept at school or at a pre-designated evacuation site until it is safe for you to
pick him/her up. Please see the Emergency Letter to Parents for more information.
Birthdays and Shabbat Parties
Birthday parties usually take place on Friday as part of the Shabbat party. If you would like to
share your child’s Birthday with his/her friends in class, please let the teacher know the date, and
we will be happy to celebrate. Your child’s teacher will guide you as to where to purchase the
party food. Cakes must be purchased at a kosher bakery. No home baked items will be allowed
to be served at school. Please avoid embarrassment to your child because home baked items
(i.e. Challah or Cake) will not be served. Any questions of Kashrut you can call the office for
assistance. We are a nut free environment. Do not bring nuts or nut products.
We would like to suggest, that instead of bringing “goody bags”, the money that would have
been spent on them, could be used to buy a small present for the class. Some great ideas are
books, puzzles, dolls, cars/trucks, or a game. The birthday child will present this gift to the class.
Please do not bring balloons since they can be a danger to children if popped.
Shabbat parties are celebrated each Friday just before lunch. Each week an Abba and Imma will
be chosen to bring the challah, grape juice and Shabbat treats for the class. No Lollipops, Hard
Candy or Gum can be brought to school.
Rosh Chodesh
We celebrate each Rosh Chodesh in a variety of ways. It may be with a crown the children make,
a moon bounce, face painting, a special cake made by the children, or some other fun activity.
Tzedaka
Tzedaka is collected daily. One or two pennies are fine. To make it easier for you, you may send
it in a roll of pennies on each Rosh Chodesh in a labeled container or Ziploc bag.
Mitzvah Notes
Mitzvah notes are very important and are most welcome! Please try to send at least once or twice
a week that you have prepared at home so as not to create distractions in the classroom.
14
Observations and Intervention
Children are observed daily by the teaching staff. Formal observations are completed two times
during the year using a developmental check list. The results are shared with parents during Parent-
Teacher Conference.
As we observe the children, in the event that we see behavior indicating that your child needs
support beyond that which we are able to provide, we will request a conference with you and may
recommend an outside evaluation, such as an IEP. We are committed to helping our parents and
students through the IEP and/or evaluation process. We want to see all our children to succeed in
our program. Should you refuse an evaluation, your child could be asked to leave the school. See
“Termination Policy.”
Biting Policy: If a child bites another child or staff member, the child will be given a stern warning
that if it happens again, he/she will be sent home immediately. Parents will be notified. The next
time the child bites we will call you to pick him/her up from school right away.
Harmful Behavior: We will make every effort to work with you and your child to ensure a
successful preschool experience.
In the event that your child is deemed harmful to himself or others either verbally or physically,
parents may be asked to do one of the following:
1. Pick up your child from school.
2. Provide a “shadow,”” behaviorist, “or “therapeutic companion” for your child during
school hours.
3. Your child may be asked to leave the school.
Mandated Reporter
As educators, we are obligated to report any suspicion of child abuse or child neglect.
Termination Policy
Unfortunately, if your child’s behavior continues to be unsafe to him/her and his/her peers, and
all our behavior modification techniques have not corrected the problem, we may ask you to
remove your child from our school. The final decision will be based upon observation and
evaluation of your child by an outside professional, along with parent/teacher conferences.
Professional help may be suggested. Any discussion about your child with the Director and/or
his teacher will be kept in strictest confidence. If termination occurs ONLY remaining tuition
will be reimbursed. You will still be responsible for the month in which the child is in school.
[Refer to Tuition Policy]
Grievance Procedure
15
Misunderstandings do occur and will be handled in a professional manner according to these
protocols:
Parents need to speak directly to their child’s teacher if a problem occurs.
If the parent is not satisfied with the outcome, the Preschool Director needs to be contacted
and will call a meeting.
If the parent is not satisfied following a meeting with the Preschool Director, Mr.
Neydavoud (The Executive Director) will be notified and a meeting will be called with Mr.
Neydavoud, the Preschool Director, the teacher and the parent(s).
A Plan of Action to resolve the problem will be made.
Positive Behavior Guidance
One of our goals is to help guide the children toward gaining independence, self-control, and
respect for others. This is done in a positive, caring manner and by setting limits and/or directing
a child’s inappropriate behavior. Corporal punishment, humiliation, threats, sarcasm, or labeling
(“good” or “bad”) are prohibited.
Examples of techniques used:
Treating all children and staff with respect and dignity
Establishing clear rules for children in the class and on the playground
Acknowledging children’s specific appropriate behavior and/or their efforts toward
gaining self-control
Handling inappropriate behavior in the environment in which it occurs through natural
and/or logical consequences
Always being supportive and caring
Discussing the importance of doing Mitzvot, behaving with Derech Eretz, and making a
Kiddush Hashem.
If the teachers have a concern about a child, the parents will be contacted immediately so that a
Plan of Action can be discussed and implemented. Our goal is to work together as a team for
each child’s best success.
Suggestions for Parents at Home
Read to your child every day. Ask your child’s teacher for suggestions, if needed.
Acknowledge your child’s efforts as well as his/her success when completing a
task
Show an interest in your child by actively listening and participating in
discussion/conversation with him/her. If necessary, set aside a special time of day
which you are focused on talking with him/her.
Discuss school activities, school friends, and new experiences with your child.
You will be encouraging learning and language development.
Establish bedtime and wake-up routines that are consistently followed
Have your child participate in everyday chores to help develop a sense of
belonging and responsibility (i.e. putting away toys, setting the table, folding
clothes, etc.)
16
Policy Changes:
Parents will be notified of any changes in the Parent Handbook or School Policies at least 30 days
before the change is in effect.
If You Need Us…
Our staff is always available to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to contact us, since
our primary goal is to provide a safe and happy Jewish environment for your children. If you need
to speak to a teacher, please leave a message with the secretary. If we are not available to speak
with you at the time, we will return your call within 24 hours.
